The real question is total cost of ownership: unit price + minimums + lead time + defects + returns + care + end-of-life. If a vendor turns “closed-loop” into “100% eco-friendly with no conditions,” that’s a red flag. Ask for current certification documents and transaction certificates, not a PDF from 2019.

The other was $5.40, 300-piece minimum, 30-day lead time, and complete fiber and care documentation. On paper, the first looked cheaper. After air freight, a 9% defect/rework rate, and returns, it landed closer to $5.90. The second was actually cheaper. Prices as of Q1 2025; verify current rates.

None of this means TENCEL is always the answer. If you need extreme abrasion resistance, heavy industrial laundering, or high-stretch compression, a TENCEL blend may underperform. Some 100% lyocell knits can pill, depending on yarn, gauge, and finishing. TENCEL is not a guarantee of wrinkle-free or shrink-proof performance; blends and finishing matter. And “closed-loop” does not mean the finished garment is unconditionally biodegradable in every landfill or ocean condition. Verify claims against current documentation.
