They are not synthetic plastic fibers. When a 100% lyocell fabric sheds during washing, those shed fibers are cellulose, not petrochemical plastic.
From the outside, 'tencel microplastics' looks like a materials question. The reality is usually a product construction and laundry question. A fabric labeled Tencel can also contain other fibers. Many comfortable, durable garments use Tencel for breathability and cotton for structure, plus a small amount of elastane for stretch. That elastane is a synthetic polymer, and in a washing machine, that component can release microplastics. The word Tencel on the label did not lie. But if you stop reading at that word, you will misread the product.

A shirt with Tencel in it can be a mostly-cotton work shirt, a stretch twill with elastane, or a nearly 100% lyocell woven. Those products share one nice fiber name, but they have different durability limits, different care instructions, and different microfiber profiles. The garment name will not tell you the difference. The full fiber declaration and care label will.
The same thinking applies to baby products. If you handed me a spec for a baby bath towel apron made with Tencel lyocell terry, the first thing I would check would not be the towel face. It would be the strap, the binding, and the fasteners. If those parts are synthetic, and they usually are, the whole product is not automatically '100% biodegradable.' The cost is not only in refunds, although that $3,750 order still stings. The cost also shows up in the environment. That is not a reason to panic about Tencel. It is a reason to be honest about what is actually in the product.
So how often should you wash bedding? For most people sleeping in clean pajamas, every one to two weeks is reasonable. If someone in the bed has allergies, asthma, night sweats, pets, or a skin condition, weekly washing or a medically recommended allergen routine makes sense. But if you are washing neutral-colored sheets every few days just to make the room feel fresher, that extra wear is not making you healthier. It is aging the fabric and increasing laundry-related fiber shedding.

To be fair, a vendor who says 'this is outside my lane' sounds less impressive at first. But the supplier who tells you what they cannot guarantee is usually the one who has actually tested the product. The supplier who says yes to everything is often just reading the fiber name back to you.
Before approving any Tencel product now, I use a short checklist:
- Read the full composition, not just the first attractive word on the label.
- Wash a sample the way the end user will wash it, not the way I wish they would.
- Ask whether an eco-claim applies to the whole finished item, including threads and trims.
- Ask where the supplier's expertise ends. If they cannot answer that, keep asking.
