Know Your Fiber, or Don't Sell It: A Quality Inspector on Tencel, Lyocell, and Material Honesty
If you can't explain what a fiber is made from, you shouldn't sell it. That might sound harsh, but I've spent the last four years as a quality and compliance manager in textiles. I review roughly 200+ fabric deliveries a year. And I do not say this lightly: as of March 2025, I've rejected about 12% of first shipments for something that had nothing to do with how the fabric looked—the material claim didn't match the physical product.
This isn't academic. On a 50,000-unit annual order, a 12% first-article failure rate costs real money. It costs overtime, testing fees, and the trust of whoever's selling the final goods. That's why I want to talk about Tencel, lyocell, and the one thing I wish more buyers asked: what is this actually made of?
Was Ist Tencel Lyocell? A Straight Answer
If you've typed 'was ist Tencel Lyocell' into a search engine, you're not alone. Honestly, the marketing copy usually says 'soft, sustainable, breathable.' That tells you almost nothing. Here's the plain-language version:
Tencel is a brand name. Lyocell is the fiber type. Tencel lyocell is made from wood pulp—usually eucalyptus—that's dissolved in a solvent, regenerated into fibers, and spun into yarn. The solvent recovery rate in a commercial closed-loop lyocell plant is high enough that the production process is widely described as more environmentally responsible than conventional viscose rayon. But 'widely described' is not the same as 'certified.'
So what is Tencel made from? Wood pulp, in most cases. Not bamboo 'processed naturally,' not recycled plastic, not an oil-based synthetic. Wood pulp that's converted into cellulose fibers. The branded Tencel lyocell sold today often comes with FSC or PEFC chain-of-custody certification. If a supplier tells you 'Tencel made from sustainably sourced wood,' ask for the certificate number. If they can't produce one, that's a red flag.
Why I Care About the Difference: Viscose Rayon vs Cotton
The question I get most often from new buyers is 'viscose rayon vs cotton—which is better?' It's the wrong question. 'Better' depends on the end use. The right question is: 'what's actually in the fabric?'
Cotton is a natural staple fiber. It's comfortable, absorbent, and it has a hand feel that people trust. But cotton quality varies enormously with staple length, growing conditions, and processing. Viscose rayon is a regenerated cellulose fiber made by dissolving wood pulp through the viscose process. It can drape beautifully and take dye well. It also has lower wet strength than lyocell, which means it can get weaker when wet if the fabric construction isn't designed for it.
Tencel lyocell is also regenerated cellulose, but the solvent system is different—and that process difference shows up in the finished fabric. I see fewer streaks, fewer pinhole defects, and more consistent dye uptake in lyocell compared with generic viscose. That's not an insult to every viscose factory; it's a statement about process control. Viscose rayon can be perfectly good for scarves and linings. But if a brand is selling 'bamboo sheets' that are actually viscose rayon, I have a problem with the label, not the fiber.
Here's the quality issue: when a batch is labeled Tencel lyocell and lab tests show viscose rayon, that's a failure even if the fabric feels fine. The buyer paid for lyocell performance and a closed-loop process. They got a different material. In my experience, this happens more often than you'd think.
